Many of us have heard the
popular saying by Winston Churchill that “He who fails to plan, plans to fail”.
But only a few of us keep that in mind in our daily endeavours, especially in
the summer. Many may have great plans for their businesses, careers and even health
and wellness, but only a few have specific plans to maximize the summer. Are
you one of them?
Are you one of those who
look forward to a great summer and then wondered where it went when it has
past? Are you one of those who spend time complaining about a short summer instead
of savouring every day of it? Are you one of those who appreciate the summer season
and yet have no plans in place to make summer feel appreciated?
Well, as your neighbourhood
Life Coach, here are some of the most important things that you must do this summer.
These five things are critical to the success of whatever plans you may have
beyond the summer holidays; in other words, without them, you may have a difficult
time finishing strong this year.
1. Spend quality
time with your family. This may be a
no brainer, but many people are guilty of it. Before the summer holidays, you were
likely very busy with your work, business and other things which you are
involved with, but you must slow down now. Frankly, if you have children,
especially who are of school age, summer is theirs. Thus, sit down with the
family and make a list of what everyone would like to do and then plan to
fulfill whatever you can based on time and resources. By the way, do this
exercise for next year right after this summer holiday.
2. Catch up with
extended family members and critical relationships. As for me, having travelled extensively this year thus
far, speaking at corporations, churches, colleges and communities, I must
confess that I haven't been in touch with some of my critical relationships.
Thus, while the kids are also trying to keep up with their friends during this
summer, I intend to also do the same, without taking away from their time. This
is one of the things you must do this summer. Don’t wait until Christmas time
to contact grandma, Uncle Paul, Auntie Patricia and the John you grew up with.
Who knows, they may be going fishing in the same area as you and your son.
3. Think deeper than
ever about your life. Of course, we
are supposed to think deeply of our lives every day, but summertime is when we must
do so than ever. This is the time to reflect and identify where you need to
improve, to review how far you have come this year, and what you need to change
in order to finish it strong. Remember that there are only three months left to
the New Year when this summertime ends. Play, but pray harder. Laugh, but think
deeply.
If you find these three
things challenging, then you did not do enough to plan ahead for the summer by
tightening loose ends at work or in business before the holiday rolled in. Summer
months are usually slow for businesses, except, of course, those that thrive
during the summer. So maximize it to ensure that when the summer period is
over, the last leg of this year would be a piece of cake for you.
In addition to these, I have
already created a schedule of things I would like to teach my children, things
that they must know before heading back to school. My daughter is starting high
school next session and my son is heading to grade 5. As I often say in my
speaking engagement, whatever has brought you thus far is insufficient to take
you to the next level; and this applies to our children as well. I enjoyed
biking with my son yesterday and about to do the same today; but every moment with
them this summer and always must be considered a teachable moment.
The summer period is meant
to be new beginnings for you in the critical areas of your life, like family,
relationships and your future. Just like the grass becomes greener and the
cloud become clearer in summer, so are we supposed to be this season. And as
your neighborhood Life Coach, I am here to help. Even while enjoying the
season, we are always available to coach and mentor you. While I have slowed
down my international engagements to also do what I have just advised you to
do, ensure to book me ahead for your events after the summer period.
May God use this summer
period to prepare you for even greater success in the last leg of 2013! May HE
protect you and your family as you come together to plan, deliberate,
rejuvenate, catch up and have fun this summer and always! Amen! Hey, hearing
from you makes my day, so why don't you leave a comment behind to encourage your
neighbourhood Life Coach. Thank you!
